Mixed fortunes for Clarets and ex-Clarets in World Cup

There were winners and losers amongst those who have worn the claret and blue in last night's World Cup qualifiers with a number of current and former Burnley players winning caps.

David Edgar won his 14th cap for Canada as they beat Cuba 3-0 at BMO Field in Toronto, not only that he scored his first ever international goal, Canada's third before being substituted.

Cuba are bottom of the group and this was a game the Canadians had to win to have any chance of progressing to the next round. It's given them a real chance now. They are second to Panama, on equal points and two points ahead of Honduras. Pointless Cuba are bottom.

It's simple, what they have to do is avoid defeat to Honduras in their last fixture in this round to go through. That game will be played in San Pedro Sula on Tuesday.

Should they get through, along with Panama, they are likely to be joined by Guatemala, USA, Mexico and one of Costa Rica and El Salvador in the round robin fourth round which will be played during 2013, from February to October.

Guatemala got to the top of their group with a key home win against Jamaica for whom Dane Richards came on as a 42nd minute substitute for Houston Dynamos' Jevaughn Watson. Jamaica still have a chance but they'll need a big win against Antigua & Barbuda on Tuesday to overall the losers of the USA v Guatemala clash.

Closer to home, and back to Britain, Sam Vokes had nothing but a watching brief last night as an unused substitute for Wales as they came from behind to beat Scotland 2-1. There were caps for two ex-Clarets in this game though with both Danny Fox and Steven Fletcher playing the full ninety minutes.

Fletcher, in his first international for over two years after patching things up with coach Craig Levein, thought he'd scored his second international goal only for it to be ruled out after the ball had been judged to have previously gone out of play.

Another ex-Claret in action was Gary Cahill. He played for England in their comfortable 5-0 win against San Marino whilst Gabor Kiraly, the record cap holder for a goalkeeper with Hungary, couldn't add to his 86 caps. He's behind Bolton's Adam Bogdan now and was a substitute in their 1-0 win in Tallinn against Estonia.

Away from full international football, it wasn't the best of night's for young Luke Conlan who received a red card for Northern Ireland under 19s in their 2-0 defeat against Greece. He gave away a 52nd minute penalty that brought about the red card and the opening goal of the game. They'll now have to beat Moldova if they are to have any chance of qualifying for the next round.

The INTERNATIONALS feature, in the Players drop down menu, has been updated.
