McCarthy comes out on top in vote

The search for a new manager to replace Eddie Howe continues. Chief Executive Lee Hoos said yesterday that work started over the weekend as Burnley set about the task of filling the vacancy with Howe installed at Bournemouth.

He wasn't giving too much away, but said it was all about quality and football philosophy. "We have assembled a squad that plays football and is designed to play football in a particular way and we need to kick on with that."

Giving no indication as to when there might be an appointment, he added: "There are so many good choices out there, so that will probably be the most difficult part. It is more important to get the right person than have an artificial date.

"We are not going to say we have to have someone in by the Blackpool game, or by the Bristol City game. It is much more important that we get the right person for the job."

Who is the right person? The two names being touted most at the moment are Mick McCarthy, out of work since losing his job at Wolves in the spring, and current Portsmouth boss Michael Appleton.

If the Clarets Mad poll is anything to go by then McCarthy would be a popular choice. The poll attracted 1,848 votes and McCarthy received just over a quarter of them, 25.1% to be exact.

He was a long way clear of the field with the wonderfully entertaining Paolo Di Canio, who I gather is not on the radar, coming second with 11.7%.

I placed some ex-Clarets in the poll. Of the fifteen options there were six that have played for the Clarets. Of those, the one to come out on top was Steve Davis, currently in charge at Crewe, with a 7.0% share.

Appleton, currently the favourite with the bookies, came down in 8th place with just 5.7% of the vote although he's certainly gaining popularity.

The first managerial change made in the days of Clarets Mad was the appointment of Steve Cotterill in 2004. The winner of the poll then was Ronnie Moore who had just lost his job at Rotherham.

When Owen Coyle got the job the poll winner was Paul Jewell. It was Steve Coppell when Brian Laws was appointed and almost two years ago Chris Hughton came out on top as the club opted for Eddie Howe.
