Burnley midfielder Alan Mahon looks set to miss the rest of the month because of a troublesome groin strain.

The 28-year-old former Wigan Athletic star has struggled with injuries throughout the season and has only made two starts since early September.

It had been hoped that Mahon was finally returning to full fitness when he played in the defeat at QPR earlier this month, only for him to suffer another injury in training.

"We had the injury scanned and he's got a deep-rooted groin strain that keeps flaring up," confirmed Clarets boss Steve Cotterill.

"It flared up again last Thursday, so he'll be missing for a few weeks.

"He got back in last week and, while he wasn't fully back, he was looking a little bit better last week and that goes and happens to him in training in the week.

"But I don't think it's been quite right for him for a little while."
