Longest serving boss Jones leaves Cardiff
Dave Jones has been sacked as manager of Cardiff City just five days after his fifth anniversary in charge of the Welsh club who have missed out again on promotion to the Premier League. Jones replaced Lennie Lawrence in May 2005. They finished in mid-table in his first three seasons in charge, and that despite leading the table for some time in the 2006/07 season, but the last three seasons have seen last match disappointment.Two years ago they just missed the play offs, last year they were beaten in the final and this month has seen them miss out again in the play offs, going down to Reading in the semi-final.Jones doesn't appear to have the support of the Cardiff fans any longer and he certainly doesn't have the support of the local media so it was no surprise when the club said they would included his position in their review.That review has been completed and Jones, the Championship's longest serving manager, has been sacked this morning.That leaves Doncaster's Sean O'Driscoll as the longest serving manager now in the Championship. He was appointed in September 2006 and is over a year ahead of Kenny Jackett (Millwall) and Alex McLeish (Birmingham) who were both appointed in November of the following year.Simon Grayson at Leeds is the only other Championship manager who has completed two years in charge of his current club.Cardiff will now begin their hunt for a new manager with chairman Gethin Jenkins saying: "We would like to thank Dave Jones for his considerable efforts with the club over the past six seasons. He leaves his post in the knowledge that he has left the club in a far better position than when he arrived."There is no news, as yet, as to whether Jones will do what he's been doing for the past six years and appeal to the FAW.
