Late change sees Taylor as Hull ref

One Premier League referee Mike Jones has withdrawn from this afternoon's game at Hull due to illness and his replacement is another Premier League referee, Anthony Taylor from Wythenshawe.

Jones refereeing a game between Hull and Burnley would definitely have brought back memories of our 2-0 home win against them in the Premier League, the game that proved to be Owen Coyle's last league win as Burnley manager.

It was, in every sense, a fortunate win as just about every major decision went our way with a dubious penalty for us give, a clear penalty for them turned away, the ridiculous disallowing of a Hull equaliser and then the sending off of Giovanni.

But Jones won't be there this afternoon and for Taylor it will be a second Burnley game this season. He refereed the home draw with Southampton and had something of a nightmare. Incredibly there was not even a solitary yellow card that afternoon as he, at least consistently, missed just about everything.

It was his third Burnley game and every bit as controversial as his second, our 3-2 win at Bramall Lane in December 2008. Even now I can't believe he fell for the dive from Billy Sharp as he went past Brian Jensen, but he did and awarded a penalty.

'Controversy' - it is something that does follow him round and just four weeks ago he was the referee who awarded Norwich that staggering stoppage time penalty that earned them a point in a 3-3 draw against Blackburn. Amusing as it was to anyone with a claret and blue persuasion it really was a shocker.

Interestingly, he wasn't given another game for three weeks but returned last week to referee the Sunderland v Fulham game.

Ahead of the Southampton game, he'd already clocked up 20 yellow cards and 3 red cards in just four games. He's certainly quietened down since and his total in 10 games is 29 yellow cards and still the same 3 red cards which all came in the same Leeds v Middlesbrough game. Of those 29 yellow cards, 16 of them have gone to home team players and 13 to away team players.

In the Sunderland game last week there were two yellow cards, for Sunderland's Lee Cattermole and Fulham's Dickson Etuhu.

Taylor currently stands 21st in RATE THE REF with a rating of 67.28 out of 100.

The assistant referees today are Jake Collin (Liverpool) and Darren Cann (Norfolk). Fourth official is Football League referee Andy Madley (Ossett) whose younger brother Bobby refereed our game at Birmingham in midweek.
