Sunderland manager Roy Keane has allowed former Aberdeen defender Russell Anderson to join Plymouth Argyle on a month's emergency loan arrangement.
The 29-year-old moved to Wearside last summer but has made only two appearances for the Black Cats and none for almost six months.
The Scotland international has struggled with injuries since his arrival at the Stadium of Light but recently played for the reserves as part of his rehabilitation.
Anderson made more than 300 appearances during his 11 years at Pittodrie and was awarded a testimonial in 2006.
He signed a three-year deal with the Black Cats in June 2007 after the two clubs agreed a transfer fee in the region of £1million for the player.
Anderson said at the time of his move: "It's a big club going places and it's exciting times to be coming here so I'm certainly looking forward to the challenge ahead.
"It's all happened quite quickly. I've been on holiday and I took a call from my agent last week saying Sunderland were interested, then it was just a case of seeing if the two clubs could agree a fee."
