Jensen signs new deal
Brian Jensen has put pen to paper on a new two year deal at Burnley, and that will extend his stay at Turf Moor to nine years since he was signed by Stan Ternent from West Brom in the summer of 2003. Jensen was brought in to replace the hapless pair of Marlon Beresford and Nik Michopolous who between them had turned in some farcical performances during the 2002/03 season, none more so than when they combined to concede seven in the last home game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday.The new man made his debut against Crystal Palace on the opening day of the 2003/04 season and had something as a shocker as nine man Palace took all three points home.He's had some criticism during his seven years to date at Burnley, and with some justification, but he's also turned in some memorable performances, particularly during our promotion season with the home games against Reading and Arsenal probably the two most outstanding.He's seen off three international goalkeepers during his time at Burnley, firstly Danny Coyne, then Gabor Kiraly and the current goalkeeper Diego Penny who has played just twice in the league, and one of those as a substitute, in two years at Burnley.Only Robbie Blake of last season's team has played more games than Jensen for the Clarets, and the Danish keeper is closing in on some notable former goalkeepers in terms of appearances.He's many a mile away from Jerry Dawson, the locally born keeper who made 522 league appearances between 1907 and 1928, still very much a club record for any player.However, he's fifth in the list of post-war goalkeepers in terms of appearances with 245 in the league and one more season as first team goalkeeper would see him pass Jimmy Strong (264 appearances) and Marlon Beresford (287).If Jensen was to remain in the first team for two more years then Adam Blacklaw (318) could be passed. He's some way to go yet to reach Alan Stevenson who played no less than 438 league games for Burnley.Jensen has become the fifth out of contract player to commit his future to Burnley, following on from Clarke Carlisle, Graham Alexander, Michael Duff and Steven Thompson.
