Ings wins tight battle after Derby win

05 September 2013 10:54
The man of the match voting and the player ratings were close run after Burnley's 3-0 win at Pride Park last Saturday against Derby County, but the end result has seen Danny Ings, scorer of the first goal, edge things.

It really was close and the man of the match vote saw three players swapping places at the top right through to the end before Ings was declared the winner with a 21.1% share.

That was only just ahead of Scott Arfield who turned in his best Burnley performance to date. He was second with 20.4% of the vote with Jason Shackell, a rock at the back and a goalscorer on his return to Derby, taking third place with 19%. Penalty saving goalkeeper Tom Heaton came fourth with a 10.8% share of the vote.

As for the player ratings; five players had ratings higher than eight and every single player recorded a rating of over seven. It's the first time the ratings have achieved that since the win over Owen Coyle's Bolton on the opening day of last season.

This time Shackell took first place with a rating of 8.85 out of 10 and that's the best since Charlie Austin's 9.49 following his hat trick in the home draw last season against Sheffield Wednesday.

Ings came in second in the ratings with 8.60; Arfield was third with a rating of 8.45 and a rating of 8.35 out of 10 won Sam Vokes the fourth place.

Ings won the most points, with eight towards the Clarets Mad Player of the Year. There were seven points for Shackell, Arfield won five points and both Heaton and Vokes won a point each.

Shackell is certainly setting the pace at the top of the player of the year table. He's already accrued 39 points and that has now stretched his lead to 13 points ahead of second place Kieran Trippier with David Jones and Keith Treacy a further eight points behind. Ings has now moved into fifth place.

The next man of the match vote will be for the East Lancashire derby against Blackburn a week on Saturday and the vote will be available just as soon as possible after the game has finished.

Meanwhile you can cast your vote for the August Goal of the Month. There are fourteen goals to choose from and voting ends at midnight on Friday. As always you can vote via the front page of the site or directly from the VOTING POLLS page.
