Ilderton in charge at St Andrew's

21 December 2012 18:15
Burnley's game against Birmingham City tomorrow at St. Andrew's will be refereed by Eddie Ilderton from Tyne & Wear, his second Burnley game this season having previously been in charge of our home game against Brighton.

He's a referee well known to us and this will be his third Burnley game in this calendar year. Apart from the Brighton game he also refereed our last game of last season, the home draw against Bristol City.

His first Burnley game was the 1-0 win against Millwall in the 2004/05 season and tomorrow will be his 13th and that despite not refereeing us once in our promotion season or our season in the Premier League.

In truth, you can look down the list of games and the two Coventry games apart there have been few problems with a referee who had a habit at one point of giving us penalties. The total of spot kicks is six and all six have been scored by six different players.

Not noted for making much use of his cards, he has been a bit busier this season and is currently averaging just over three yellow cards per game. In 17 games there have been 56 yellow cards and two red cards.

Of those yellows, 28 have gone to home team players and 28 to away team players. The most recent of the red cards was Scunthorpe's Paul Reid in their 2-2 home draw against Notts County last month, but the other notably was Kevin Long playing for Portsmouth in a 4-2 defeat at Carlisle.

His performances in Burnley games is reflected in his placing in RATE THE REF. He's currently 17th with a rating of 71.17 out of 100, and that's from seven qualifying games.

The assistant referees are Paul Rees (Somerset) and Mathew Buonassisi (Northamptonshire). The fourth official is Wayne Porter (Lincolnshire).
