Howieson gets late New Zealand call

Cameron Howieson is on his way back to New Zealand at the eleventh hour having been called up for a friendly international as a late replacement for former Blackburn and current QPR defender Ryan Nelsen.

It's something of a late dash for Howieson, who has already won three full international caps for his country, and instead of lining up for our youth team at Gawthorpe in a Youth Alliance Cup tie against Walsall, he'll be in the All Whites squad for a friendly against China in Shangai.

Those three caps all came in our close season and all came as a substitute. He made his debut against El Salvador and followed it up with another appearance against Honduras, both games played in the United States of America and both friendly internationals.

HIs third game marked a World Cup debut as he came on in a 4-3 win against the Solomon Islands. That was in June and more recently he featured in the New Zealand Olympic Squad before returning to Burnley for the 2012/13 season.

Now he's on his travels again hoping to win a fourth cap and other English based players in the squad are Winston Reid (West Ham), Tommy Smith (Ipswich) who lined up against us on Saturday, Tim Payne (Blackburn) and Chris Wood (West Brom) who is currently on loan at Millwall.
