Howe off the mark

First-half goals from Jay Rodriguez and Dean Marney secured a 2-1 win for Burnley at Portsmouth. Eddie Howe was able to enjoy his first win as Burnley manager and only the club's second away victory of the npower Championship campaign. Homegrown striker Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 31st minute and John Utaka levelled two minutes later before Marney's strike eight minutes before half-time proved decisive. Daniel Fox was given time and space on the left flank to cross for Rodriguez to fire home a right-footed shot from six yards out. Yet the response from Portsmouth was admirable as they drew level within two minutes thanks to a piece of magic from Kanu. The former Arsenal frontman showed superb skill to turn and create the space for Utaka to rifle in a right-footed shot which flew into the top corner from 18 yards. But four minutes later, Burnley restored their lead when Steven Thompson's shot was parried and Marney followed up with a superb overhead kick from 12 yards.
