Graham to referee Elland Road clash
The referee for tonight's game at Elland Road against Leeds is Fred Graham from Essex, just his second Burnley game having refereed our 2-1 win at West Ham last season.
I wasn't at that game and haven't seen Graham referee. There were some queries at his performance on the commentary that day with strong suggestions that he was leaning much too far towards West Ham, but those who voted in the RATE THE REF gave him a rating of 67.00 out of 100 which sees him in 28th place.
He had a difficult start when he first became a Football League referee. That was ahead of the 2004/05 season, but his performances were not deemed to be good enough and he was demoted again at the end of that first season.
He was out for just a year and was given a second opportunity before the start of the 2006/07 season. This time he's taken it and the now 48 year old is in his seventh consecutive season.
It was another season and a half before he was finally allocated a game at Championship level, a clash between Plymouth and Scunthorpe at Home Park in December 2007, and even now his experience at this level remains limited.
This season he's refereed 32 games but only seven of them have been at this level. Last Tuesday he reached three figures in yellow cards for the season. His total is now 101 with just one red card.
49 of the yellow cards have gone to home team players with the other 52 going to away team players, and that one red card went to Aldershot's Ben Herd in a 4-2 win against Rochdale in December.
His last game was a week ago today, Cardiff's 1-1 home draw against Barnsley. There were three players carded in that game. They were Leon Barnett and Aron Gunnarson (both Cardiff) and Barnsley's Chris O'Grady.
The assistant referees are Simon Clayton (County Durham) and Wayne Grunnill (East Yorkshire). The fourth official is Mark Astley (Manchester).
