Getting ready for the first COCUP draw

13 June 2012 09:31
The draw for the first round of the newly named Capital One Cup is set for tomorrow morning with the Clarets set to find out the 2012/13 season's first opponents at around 9:30 a.m.

This season, due to the late start of the league, the season starts with the newly named League Cup with the first round games coming in the midweek commencing Monday 13th August although clubs, should they agree, would be permitted to move the game to Saturday 11th August.

The Football League have given little indication, indeed no indication, as to whether the format remains the same other than to confirm that neither Blackburn Rovers nor  Bolton Wanderers will play in the first round but will enter one round later alongside the Premier League clubs not involved in Europe.

That's similar to previous seasons and we are now aware that the 70 clubs involved in tomorrow's draw will be split geographically north and south. There has been no confirmation, although it is expected, that the clubs will be seeded in the first two rounds which would mean us playing a team who ended last season below the top half of League One.

That means we could face one of Accrington, Burton, Bradford City, Bury, Chesterfield, Crewe, Fleetwood, Hartlepool, Oldham, Morecambe, Port Vale, Preston, Rochdale, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Shrewsbury and York.

The last time we played in the League Cup before the start of the league season was in 1980. On that occasion we played both legs of a first round tie against Wrexham in the week before the first league game, winning 3-1 at the Racecourse Ground and 2-1 at home.

Meanwhile, the league fixtures will be published next Monday 18th June at 9:00 a.m. and again, thanks to the support of Burnley Football Club, they will be available on Clarets Mad.
