Freedman lands Palace job

Former Crystal Palace striker Dougie Freedman has been appointed as the new Crystal Palace manager having been in caretaker charge since New Year's Day. Palace reacted to the 3-0 defeat at Millwall on the first day of the year, immediately ending George Burley's time at Selhurst Park and putting crowd favourite Freedman, who was Burley's assistant, in temporary charge.Their pursuit for a new manager took them into League One. They approached Bournemouth's Eddie Howe initially and looked as though they would land him until Charlton Athletic came into the equation.Yesterday, as Howe somewhat surprisingly opted to stay at Bournemouth, they were linked with Rochdale boss Keith Hill, with Rochdale refuting any suggestion there had been an approach. However, today, they have decided to stick with the caretaker and have given Freedman the job until the end of the 2012/13 season.Chairman Steve Parish said: "We have spent the past two weeks interviewing candidates, taking advice and discussing amongst ourselves the criteria we need in a new manager to put this club back where it belongs."As a consequence of that I am delighted that Dougie Freedman has agreed to become the manager of Crystal Palace Football Club."
