Former Claret Hapgood passes away

News has reached us today of the death of former Burnley winger Tony Hapgood last Thursday at the age of 81. The son of former Arsenal and England star Eddie Hapgood, Tony joined Burnley at a time when his dad was manager of Blackburn Rovers. That was in 1948 but he had to wait until September 1951 for his first team debut. He played just seven times in the first team, all in the 1951/52 season, scoring twice, before signing for Watford in the summer of 1953 and later played non-league football for both Ashford Town and Chatham. He was an all round sportsman who had reached the final of the under-21 Northern Finals at tennis and was also an outstanding table tennis player. He died peacefully in hospital last Thursday and leaves his wife Irene, son Michael and daughter Lorri as well as four grandchildren and one grandchild. Tony is the third former Burnley player to pass away recently following Gordon Haigh and George Knight. His funeral will take place at Burnley Crematorium at 2:20 p.m. this Friday. Our thoughts are very much with Irene, the Hapgood family and their friends at this sad time.
