Steven Caldwell, Burnley captain until his release a year ago, is close to a deal with Birmingham City having been released by Wigan Athletic at the end of last season. It's all change at Birmingham. Having been relegated last May they are under new management with Chris Hughton having replaced Alex McLeish and the new boss is looking for central defenders with both Roger Johnson and Scott Dann expected to move on before the start of next season. Caldwell, now 30, joined the Clarets from Sunderland right at the end of the January transfer window in 2007 and was quickly appointed club captain by manager Steve Cotterill, a position he retained under both Owen Coyle and Brian Laws. He was released in the summer of 2010 amidst suggestions of a clash with Laws and signerd last season for Wigan where he made 15 appearances, some of them alongside his brother. He's held talks with Birmingham and suggestions are that he could be their next signing.
