Five teams with six points
Two weekends of the new Championship season have left five teams with maximum points with Cardiff and Southampton ahead of Blackpool, Brighton and Derby on goal difference. As those five teams enjoy the sight of the league table right now then the supporters of Bristol City, Leeds, Coventry and Doncaster in particular will be concerned to see their respective teams without points. At this stage last season we'd already had our first managerial casualty in the Championship. As we travelled back from Ipswich on the second Saturday of the season, news broke that Kevin Blackwell had been pushed through the door at Sheffield United. A year on, they are a division lower and have had no less than three managers since. None gone yet, but the first one to be placed under any pressure by the fans is Steve McClaren at Nottingham Forest. Little Billy went in the summer and the former England boss (without umbrella we are told) came in. They are sat just above the pointless clubs with us on one point. The Forest fans don't like it. McClaren doesn't either and has been moaning about the lack of transfer activity. Forest and McClaren hardly looks a marriage made in heaven does it? Still, it hasn't reached demonstration stage just yet but that's exactly what was going on at Leeds on Saturday. "Bates Out!" read the banners. The ownership of Leeds has always been something of a mystery until recently but there is no doubt now that the former owner of both Wigan and Chelsea is now the man at Leeds. There has been a limited amount of positive news to come out of Elland Road all summer and the squad looks nothing like as strong as it did last season. They weren't expecting a pointless first two games and the target here is the chairman and owner rather than the popular manager Simon Grayson. It could turn very ugly there in the near future. They lost at home to Middlesbrough on a day when Premier League referee Anthony Taylor took centre stage with seven yellow and no less than three red cards. That's not quite eclipsed Darren Deadman who has incredibly taken his totals so far to 21 yellow and 4 red cards in just 4 games this season, two of those games in the Championship. The message, as always, to Championship clubs is to beware Darren Deadman. We've got a rest this midweek thanks to Birmingham's Carling Cup success over Arsenal last season. It means they play in the Europa League whilst we sit out what should have been a trip to St. Andrew's.
