Five choices for December Goal of the Month

16 January 2013 11:17
Burnley scored six goals in December against Blackburn Rovers, Watford, Birmingham City and Derby County and you can make your choice between five of them for the December Goal of the Month. August and November winner Dean Marney

The first of those goals was an unforgettable one. Sam Vokes, in the 89th minute, headed home Burnley's equaliser against Blackburn in front of the Jimmy Mac Stand, thus becoming the first Claret to score against them at Turf Moor since Peter Noble scored what proved to be the winner on Boxing Day 1978.

After a clean sheet at Forest and a penalty in the home game against Watford, the next two qualifying goals came at St. Andrew's in the 2-2 draw against Birmingham. We came from a goal behind to lead 2-1 with two goals in two minutes.

The first, from Danny Ings, came after he brought down a chipped ball into the box from Dean Marney, taking him past Curtis Davies before sliding the ball home from a tight angle past Jack Butland.

Two minutes later, after a foul on Ings, Ross Wallace crashed home a free kick right into the postage stamp to give us the lead.

Four days later Charlie Austin and Michael Duff completed the scoring for the month in a 2-0 Boxing Day win against Derby.

Charlie's was his 20th league goal of the season but it did look to be going some yards wide of target before deflecting off a Derby defender.  Duff ended the year's scoring with his first goal since April 2011, heading home a Wallace cross.

That's five to choose from - one each from Vokes, Ings, Wallace, Austin and Duff.

The winning goal will be guaranteed a place in the Goal of the Season vote in May which already includes the previous monthly winners. They are Dean Marney (August v Port Vale), Austin (September v Millwall), Martin Paterson (October v Crystal Palace) and Marney (November v Hull).

Voting will run for three days, until the end of Friday. The next vote will be for the man of the match at Millwall and will be underway within an hour of the final whistle at the Den.
