FA's impeccable timing on last day

10 May 2011 09:41
Everything had, sort of, been done and dusted in the Championship before the last games. QPR and Norwich were up, Presto Scunthorpe and Sheffield United were down. Cardiff, Swansea and Reading were in the play offs and Nottingham Forest were all but there. The only hope on the horizon for some clubs was the potential for QPR to be docked points over the Alejandro Faurlin affair. Even we might have benefited although it was the longest of long shots. Were QPR to be docked a massive 25 points, as some were suggesting and had they gone on to beat Leeds then a win against Cardiff would have taken us into the play offs, provided Millwall didn't win.Leeds and Millwall still would have had hopes of the play offs whilst Cardiff could have been looking at an automatic slot, as could Swansea. It was all boiling up nicely when the FA said the decision would be delayed, having been expected on the Friday, but no one could have believed even these incompetents would have announced it just around an hour before kick off.As expected, it was all bottled. They were found guilty of just two of the seven charges. For one they were fined £800,000 and for the other the fine was £75,000. That will really have hurt the club won't it given they have the likes of Mittal, Ecclestone and Briatore. It left the last day games just about meaningless and even though Leeds won at QPR, coming back from 1-0 behind, it changed nothing for Leeds with Nottingham Forest winning at Crystal Palace. The only change saw the two Welsh sides swap places. Swansea are now third and thus will face Forest in the play offs whilst Cardiff have a date with Reading. For the other 20 clubs the season is now over.Well done to Danny Graham who has ended the season as the Championship's leading goalscorer. Jay Rodriguez is 12th in the list and, if you remove penalties, only seven players have scored more goals than him.Portsmouth, Preston and Leeds are the only clubs with more yellow cards than us. That makes a change from last season when we were chasing a fair play place in Europe. We certainly couldn't compete with Sheffield United, Crystal Palace and Portsmouth with the red cards though. We've also included the average attendances of each club, and we've dropped three places since we last published them with QPR, Swansea and Crystal Palace all going above us, leaving us in 17th place. The last results and stats are below along with the goalscorers and disciplinary records of each club.
