Ex-Claret beats Black Panther's record
Two current Clarets, Cameron Howieson and Danny Lafferty, won caps yesterday and there were also caps for three former Burnley players with one of them breaking a fifty year record. Second cap for Danny Lafferty
Howieson had been pencilled in for our Youth Alliance Cup tie against Walsall yesterday afternoon but instead was in Shanghai and on the bench for New Zealand in an international friendly against China.
He got on, with 13 minutes remaining, as a substitute for West Ham's Winston Reid to win his fourth cap, and still over five weeks short of his 18th birthday.
That game was played yesterday morning, our time, and last night Danny Lafferty won a recall to the Northern Ireland team. It was his second cap and his first in a competitive game, coming just four days after his first league start of the season for Burnley when he played well at Ipswich.
Lafferty was in a Northern Ireland side that could only draw at home against Azerbaijan, and then only with a late goal from David Healy.
Namesake Kyle was in the team, making his 35th international appearance and he was one of three ex-Clarets to feature last night along with Gary Cahill and Gabor Kiraly.
Cahill was in the England side in their 4-2 defeat against Sweden and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Kiraly was preferred to Adam Bogdan in goal for Hungary in a 2-0 friendly defeat against Norway in Budapest.
For Kiraly, who has been with TSV Munich 1860 since leaving Burnley in 2009, it was a historic occasion. Last night brought him his 87th cap for Hungary. Only two players, József Bozsik and László Fazekas, have won more caps for Hungary with 101 and 92 respectively.
But last night, Gabor became the most capped Hungarian goalkeeper, beating the 86 caps won by Gyula Grosics, known as the Black Panther. Grosics won his caps between 1947 and 1962 and, along with record cap holder Bozsik, was in the Hungary team that beat England 6-3 at Wembley in 1953.
The INTERNATIONALS feature has been updated following last night's games.
