Edgar leads way for Burnley internationals
David Edgar won his 12th cap for Canada last night as they beat Panama 1-0 to move to the top of their current qualifying group for the 2014 World Cup Finals in Brazil. David Edgar is top of the league with Canada
A solitary goal from Dwayne de Rosario 13 minutes from time gave the Canadians a second win in three games and without a goal conceded. That has now taken them above Panama into first place of Group C in their Round 3 qualification stage.
They will need to finish in the top two of the four team group to qualify for the next stage and they look favourites to do that now but will face a tough task on Tuesday with the return game against closest rivals Panama.
Interestingly, Canada have now kept ten clean sheets in the games Edgar has played for his country. He made his debut against Greece as a substitute in February last year in a game they lost 1-0. Another friendly, this time against Armenia in February this year was lost 3-1, but the other ten have all ended with no goals conceded, and that includes eight qualifiers for the World Cup.
The only other Burnley player to feature last night was Sam Vokes. He replaced Norwich's Steve Morison in Wales' 2-0 home defeat against Belgium with Manchester City's Vincent Kompany and Jan Vertonghen, now at Spurs.
Former Claret Kyle Lafferty was in the Northern Ireland team beaten 2-0 in Moscow by Russia while two other ex-Clarets, Gary Cahill and Gabor Kiraly, were unused substitutes for England and Hungary respectively.
Burnley's next permanent signing will be Dane Richards on New Year's Day 2013. He too was an unused substitute for Jamaica in Kingston as Jamaica sensationally beat the United States of America 2-1, and this after Clint Dempsey had given the Americans a first minute lead.
There was a familiar name on the scoresheet for Jamaica. Rodolph Austin, now at Leeds, got the equaliser but Jamaica's all time leading goalscorer Luton Shelton scored the winner on 62 minutes.
The INTERNATIONALS feature has been updated to include the appearances of Edgar, Vokes and Lafferty and all the international appearances of Dane Richards, in readiness for his arrival at Burnley, have now been included.
