Edgar inspired by Nugent impact

Clarets boss Owen Coyle looks set to ring the changes for the Carling Cup third-round tie at Oakwell, meaning Edgar is likely to be given an opportunity in the centre of defence as he was against Hartlepool in the previous round. That match is the only first-team action Edgar has seen this season since joining from Newcastle in the summer. But having watched fellow new arrival Nugent come off the bench to score twice on his home debut against Sunderland on Saturday, Edgar feels even more determined to make the most of his chance to challenge for a first-team jersey. "We know from the gaffer's reputation that he is not afraid to put players in and if you do well, you will keep your shirt," Edgar said. "David has gone in, he's scored two goals and you can't do much more than that as a striker. "He'll be looking to start the next league game, but the other two strikers, (Steven) Fletcher and (Martin) Paterson, have also been unbelievable when they have played. "It's an inspiration obviously to be involved in Premier League games and that is my main aim. I have to just keep plugging away and hopefully I will get my chance." The Canadian is hoping to catch the manager's eye, but for the time being, is happy to be part of a successful squad. "I played against Hartlepool in the league cup and it's just a chance to play football - you need to play," Edgar said. "The gaffer will probably make changes again. If he doesn't that's fine but I hope that I'll be involved and that will be my chance to play. "We want to win every game we are involved in and we have got the squad now to do that and to mix things up and change. We want to go far in the league cup and be in the hat for the next round. "The lads that are playing in the Premier League at the moment are going to want to keep their shirts because they got the win on Saturday and will be hoping to play again next week. "But it's a chance to play football and show that we can play at this level. You have got to take your chance."
