Duffy is a target for next season

Burnley signed Everton defender Shane Duffy yesterday on a 28-day loan but manager Eddie Howe is already looking beyond that and potentially into next season for the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international. Howe was delighted to add Duffy to the Clarets' squad for the next four weeks. "He's a young player who has done very well this season for Everton's reserves and he is a player with big potential," the Clarets' boss said."I'm delighted with the deal. It's a double benefit in that it gives us a chance to look at him with a view to next season but he also increases competition for places now and comes straight into the squad."We have got a lot of games in April. We will need to use the whole squad and Shane will add more depth."Until the Bristol City game, Howe had made no changes to his back four, but seven goals conceded in the last three games have seen him go out and bring in Duffy, and I understand we were close to bringing in another defender. He will certainly be looking to strengthen in that area during the summer and it looks very likely as though a long term loan could be in the offing for Duffy if he does well during this short loan spell at Turf Moor.
