Dean brings it all to an end

A year ago it was Mike Dean's whistle that signalled our promotion to the Premier League at the end of our play off final against Sheffield United and today he'll blow the final whistle on our one year stay at the end of the game against Spurs. Dean's performance at Wembley wasn't met with great approval by Blades' boss Kevin Blackwell and his last Burnley game, in the recent home defeat against Blackburn, received similar acclaim from most Burnley supporters.I'd billed him as the best referee in the league ahead of the game but he had something of a nightmare that started with him being conned by the cheating Martin Olsson who got the penalty that won the game."We knew this referee gave more penalties," said Olsson, in a claim that the FA incredibly decided they weren't particularly worried about. That shocker of a performance got Dean and his hapless assistant Simon Beck a massive pat on the back when they were awarded the Manchester United v Chelsea game a week later. When both officials turned in further horror shows they were immediately dropped from the Premier League for a week.Having a shocker against Burnley obviously isn't a concern to those running our game, doing the same when Manchester United are involved forces them into action.Dean has handed out just two yellow cards this season in four Champions League games but he's far happier to get the cards out of his pocket in domestic football. In 38 games he's given out 146 yellow cards and seven red cards. Of those 146 yellows, 75 have gone to home players and 71 to away players. His last game was last Sunday when he took charge of the key Championship game between Sheffield Wednesday and Crystal Palace at Hillsborough, the game that saw Wednesday relegated to League One. Again he didn't have a particularly good game and there were three yellow cards in the game, Jermaine Johnson (Wednesday) with Calvin Andrew and Johannes Ertl (both Palace). The assistant referees are Andy Garratt (West Midlands) and Andy Halliday (North Yorkshire) whilst Nigel Miller (Co Durham), a referee who has had some nightmares with Burnley over the years, is fourth official.Wiley.
