Danny Ings gets a brace in England romp

Danny Ings tonight won his second England Under-21 cap and scored two of England's goals in a 9-0 win against San Marino at Shrewsbury Town's Greenhouse Meadow.

It was an easy win for England and Ings played his part as he scored the third and sixth goals in what is his second appearance, but his first start, for his country.

When he came on as a substitute last month against the same team he became just our third England Under-21 international, following in the footsteps of Richard Chaplow and Jay Rodriguez.

Chappy and Jay Rod won just one cap each at that level as substitutes so tonight Ings has become our first player to win two caps and the first to start an England Under-21 game.

A delighted Ings said after the game: "It means the world to me to make my full debut for the England Under 21s and to cap it all off with a couple of goals means so much. For my family and me, it's one of the biggest achievements I'll ever have.

It was a special night too for Luke Conlan. He also won his second Under-21 cap in Northern Ireland's 1-0 win against Cyprus, and like Ings got his first start at this level.

Two former Clarets were unused substitutes for their countries tonight at full international level. Jay Rodriguez sat out England's 1-0 defeat against Germany and his Southampton team mate Danny Fox did likewise as Scotland won 1-0 in Norway.

However, there were caps for two former loan players. Alex Kačaniklič was in the Sweden team whose World Cup hopes were ended by Portugal and Rhys Williams played in the Australian team that beat Costa Rica 1-0 with a Tim Cahill goal in a friendly played at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

The caps won by Kačaniklič and Williams have been added to the INTERNATIONALS feature.
