Coyle cites missed chances
26 Aug 2009 - 09:52:15
Burnley boss Owen Coyle blamed wasteful finishing for his side being taken to extra-time by Hartlepool United in the Carling Cup.
Second-half substitute Steven Fletcher netted twice to drag 10-man Burnley back from the brink of an upset and into the third round draw.
Pools striker Adam Boyd looked to have repeated his first-round heroics against Coventry and sent the hosts through after latching on to Andy Monkhouse's cross in the 39th minute.
But Burnley showed their Premier League resolve thanks to former Hibernian striker Fletcher, who scored after 84 and 108 minutes at Victoria Park to secure a 2-1 victory for the visitors.
"The two finishes were top-class finishes, but having said that, in the first 15 minutes, we had two or three great goalscoring opportunities and never took them," said Coyle.
"All credit to Hartlepool, it was a really spirited performance. They showed their quality on the night and scored a very good goal from their first real attack of the half, but they finished it really well.
"All of a sudden, you are one down and you still want to get through.
"We had chances and never took them, so we freshened it up a little bit and got the reaction we were looking for.
"There were an awful lot of positives for us, but equally there will be a lot of positives for Hartlepool."
