Steve Cotterill was disconsolate after seeing his Burnley side's winless league run extend to 17 games by a 1-0 defeat at Southend United.
The reverse leaves the Clarets just four points clear of the drop zone and facing anxious end to the season.
Cotterill said: "We did not deserve to lose, but in the end paid the penalty for a mistake at the death.
"We are in a terrible rut and things are not going our way. That always seems to be the case when you are near the bottom.
"All we can hope for is that a little bit of luck starts going our way, because we have not had any real breaks for some time."
