Burnley boss Steve Cotterill praised the decision of Martin Atkinson after the match official called off Saturday's visit of Norwich City just minutes before kick-off at Turf Moor.
"A lot of the pitch was playable but in the bottom corner the referee judged that it was not," he said.
"He was talking about player safety and it's hard to question that. Whilst 80 per cent of the pitch was okay, there were some wet patches and the referee has made a decision.
"He wasn't happy from 11:30am but there was not a lot more the ground staff could have done.
"It's probably the most difficult thing a referee has to do and every time we have had one of those decisions I have supported the referee. He has no axe to grind, he is neutral."
Norwich manager Peter Grant added: "The referee has made the right decision. He tried to give it as much chance as possible as he could have called the game off two hours earlier.
"The forecast was for drizzle and in Burnley that means a downpour."
