Burnley have plugged the gap left by Wayne Thomas' move to Southampton by snapping up Watford centre-half Clarke Carlisle.

The 27-year-old joins the Clarets in a £200,000 deal, signing a three-year contract at Turf Moor.

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill told the club's official website: "We have got a good, experienced player at this level and it's a decent bit of business.

"Clarke is a big, strong lad who is athletic and a good leader.

"He has been through quite a lot in his career, but he has always been a bit of a pain whenever we have had to play against him.

"From what I have seen I don't have any doubts that he will be a good addition to our squad once he has settled in."
