Burnley have signed Wigan Athletic midfielder Alan Mahonon loan, with a permanent deal to be completed in the summer.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international has fallen down the pecking order with the Latics and has opted to make the short journey to Turf Moor, with a £200,000 deal and a three-year contract on the table.

Clarets boss Steve Cotterill told the club's official website: "We managed to sort out a deal with Wigan to take Alan Mahon until the end of the season, with an agreed permanent deal going ahead at the end of the season.

"It's been a mad rush to make sure we beat the deadline to get him signed in time and we're looking forward to having him in the squad hopefully for the next three and a bit years."

Mahon started his career with Tranmere Rovers and has also played for Sporting Lisbon and Blackburn Rovers, as well as spending loan stints with Cardiff City and Ipswich Town.
