Burnley have appealed to the Football Association following Clarke Carlisle's red card in the seventh minute of the 1-1 draw with Millwall.
The Clarets have launched the appeal even though they know Carlisle's suspension could be extended to four matches.
Boss Brian Laws said: "We're obviously disappointed and, having analysed it, we feel it's harsh. Therefore we feel there's an element of doubt and we feel we have to move forward by appealing against a three-match ban.
"We're aware of the need to be sure about such an appeal, but we feel strongly enough that there is a case to overturn the decision.
"The referee has had a look at it and still feels he made the right decision.
"However, we have to hope the professionals on the panel see there was no element of danger to the opponent and it was simply mistimed."
