Burnley beat the transfer deadline by a matter of minutes to complete the £400,000 capture of Sunderland centre-back Steve Caldwell.
The 26-year-old Scotland international has signed a three-and-a-half year contract to seal a switch that could eventually cost the Clarets £600,000.
Caldwell joined the Black Cats in the summer of 2004 and went on to make 81 appearances for the Wearsiders, scoring five goals.
He had started his career with Newcastle United and has also had loan stints with Blackpool, Bradford City and Leeds United.
The Turf Moor club have also confirmed that striker Gifton Noel-Williams has wrapped up his switch to Spanish side Real Murcia.
