St Johnstone have refused to allow Burnley to speak to manager Owen Coyle regarding the managerial vacancy at Turf Moor.
The Clarets had hoped to confirm the former striker's appointment at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, but that will not now be the case.
A statement on the Scottish side's official website read: "St Johnstone has been approached by Barry Kilby, chairman of Burnley, requesting permission to speak to our manager, Owen Coyle, regarding their vacant managerial position.
"Prior to permission being given, St Johnstone sought to agree a compensation figure particularly as Owen's contract was extended in the summer to 31st May 2010.
"The figure offered by Burnley fell far below St Johnstone's valuation of Owen Coyle.
"St Johnstone does not wish to impede Owen's progress but Burnley's offer proves that their value is much lower than St Johnstone's. As such, permission to speak to Owen has not been granted."
