Clarets relishing role of underdogs

After their first 'giant-killing' of the season against Manchester United on Wednesday the Clarets face Everton, fifth last season, at Turf Moor on Sunday. Comparisons have already been made between what David Moyes has achieved at Everton and what fellow Scot Coyle could do with Burnley. However, although the Clarets boss is full of admiration for what his friend on Merseyside has achieved, he insists the club is ploughing their own furrow and is not following anyone else's blueprint. "Burnley are a completely different entity from anyone. We came into the Premier League with an average attendance of 13,000," he said. "We really are unique and we like it that way. Anything we have to do we have to do on our own merits. "Last season we were tipped for relegation from the Championship and we were in the bottom four for turnover in the division and we defied the so-called critics because we believe in each other and what we are doing. "If we play to our maximum we can win games, we have shown that time and time again. "We have good players and anyone who under-estimates that then they will know that." Despite their shock victory over United, Burnley are still one of the favourites to go down just 12 months after winning promotion via the Championship play-offs but that does not concern Coyle. Beating United has boosted the squad's confidence and the manager is determined not to allow the players to forget their priorities. "The win gives the players confidence going into the game on Sunday," he said. "We have to add to that, gain more points and get some momentum because we are capable of winning matches. "We are under no illusions how hard the job will be, we just have to stay united as a group. "Every match we play we will be underdogs and I don't have a problem with that as I believe we have a team which can go toe-to-toe with opponents and compete. "I just have to make sure we get the best out of the players. "You can have all the confidence and belief in the world but if you don't go and deliver on it you will get zero points." Coyle is wary of the threat Everton will pose despite their opening 6-1 drubbing at home to Arsenal last weekend. "Everton for me are a quality side and David Moyes has built that up over the years and he is fantastic at what he does," he added. "That is why he is quite rightly regarded as one of the top managers in world football and I'm another big fan. "We know Everton are going to be motivated, they are a fantastic team and they have a desire to win games." Striker Robbie Blake, Wednesday's match-winner against United, hopes the Turf Moor effect can play its part again. "The atmosphere played into our hands (against United) and hopefully there are going to be many more of them as it is important we do well at home," he said. "There are too many good teams not for us not to be playing and pressing how we did against United."
