Burnley manager Brian Laws has ended his interest in Andrew Driver after accusing Hearts of being stubborn over the asking price for the winger.
The Clarets have had two bids for the 22-year-old rejected by the Tynecastle club, who are thought to want £3.5million up front.
Laws told BBC Radio Lancashire: "It's dead, they're being stubborn - it's too many things I feel uncomfortable with."
Burnley have also been linked Preston's Ross Wallace and Cardiff's Peter Whittingham.
Laws refused to confirm or deny his targets but hopes to have a left-sided player in by the end of the week.
"It's not just Driver," he said on Thursday. "There are other players and we're waiting for those to fall into place.
"We're hoping to make rapid progress over the next 48 hours and we'll be happy with either one that we get.
"A lot of clubs think, because we are fairly comfortable with money, they just pluck a number out of the sky and that's what we will pay.
"We are experienced people in football and we know the values of players and what we are comfortable with.
"We are not going to throw all the money we have away and the Driver situation was getting out of hand."
