Clarets must wait in Carling Cup

16 June 2010 09:55
Burnley haven't played a Carling Cup tie at Turf Moor since the heartbreaking semi-final exit against Tottenham in January 2009, and we'll have to wait a while longer having received a bye in this year's first round. Two of the clubs relegated from the Premier League don't take part in the first round which sees the other 70 Football League clubs compete for places in the second round. The 35 winners will then be joined by Burnley and Hull along with all but the top seven from last season's Premier League. That will see 25 second round ties and the remaining seven clubs, those competing in Europe, will enter at the third round stage to take the number of clubs in that round to 32 after which it is a straight knock out.The first round ties will be played on the first midweek after the league season has got underway after which Burnley will come in as one of the seeded clubs in the second round. The draw for the first round was made this morning and is as follows:Hartlepool v Sheffield UnitedLeicester v MacclesfieldWalsall v TranmereCarlisle v HuddersfieldStockport v PrestonBarnsley v RochdaleMorecambe v CoventryDoncaster v AccringtonChesterfield v MiddlesbroughPeterborough v RotherhamBradford City v Nottingham ForestLeeds v LincolnSheffield Wednesday v BuryScunthorpe v OldhamCrewe v DerbyExeter v IpswichSouthend v Bristol CitySouthampton v BournemouthBrentford v CheltenhamQPR v Port ValeTorquay v ReadingNorwich v GillinghamStevenage v PortsmouthShrewsbury v CharltonCardiff v BurtonNorthampton v BrightonSwansea v BarnetPlymouth v Notts CountyWycombe v MillwallOxford v Bristol RoversMilton Keynes Franchise v Dagenham & RedbridgeHereford v ColchesterYeovil v Crystal PalaceAldershot v WatfordSwindon v Leyton Orient
