Clarets confirm Richards departure

A week ago news from Norway revealed that Dane Richards had left Turf Moor and was to sign a permanent deal with Norwegian club FK Bodø/Glimt where he has been on loan since the beginning of April.

Nothing was said by our club until late afternoon yesterday when they finally confirmed the news we all knew, that his contract has been terminated, and, for the first time, they revealed that he'd originally signed an 18-month contract with the Clarets.

We signed Richards from the MLS. He was playing for New York Red Bulls when we agreed the deal last summer but subsequently played for Vancouver Whitecaps before arriving in Burnley ahead of the January transfer window.

He made just two substitute appearances for us. The first of them was at Barnsley in the FA Cup when he replaced Ross Wallace in the 69th minute. He made two early runs, winning a corner from the first, but then faded out of the game.

His second, and what proved to be his last, appearance was in the awful 1-0 home defeat against Huddersfield. He was the surprising choice to replace the injured Dean Marney who came off injured on 15 minutes, but he was then substituted himself on the hour with Sam Vokes coming on.

In truth he looked out of his depth. He didn't look like a player equipped for Championship football or anywhere near it, so it was no surprise that a few weeks later he was sent out on loan to FK Bodø/Glimt with manager Sean Dyche saying at the time: "Dane was unbeknown to us when he came in.

"The club had already signed him when I was appointed and we feel we have given him a fair time to try and get used to it and give him a little taste for it. We just thought he was short to be honest for what we needed, so the idea of a loan is to get Dane out and playing again and get him some game time."

He's scored twice for FK Bodø/Glimt in 14 appearances. They have not confirmed anything yet but he will be joining them permanently.

I think we can put this one down as a signing that simply did not work.
