Clarets check on Carlisle

Burnley will hand a late fitness test to centre-half Clarke Carlisle ahead of the match at Portsmouth. Carlisle was expected to miss out after limping off at half-time in Saturday evening's goalless draw at Scunthorpe but after being assessed he could recover in time. Boss Eddie Howe told the club's official website: "Clarke is not as serious as we first thought but we will have to wait and see if he is available." If Carlisle fails to make it, Andre Bikey should take his place after replacing him against the Iron. Striker Steven Thompson is available despite struggling with a niggling groin problem which will be checked by a specialist later this week. Fellow forward Martin Paterson (thigh) has a chance of making the game but midfielder Chris McCann will miss out as he continues to recover from a long-term knee injury.
