Carlisle bullish over Clarets
17 Aug 2009 - 11:15:44
Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle insists the Clarets are not afraid of coming up against some of the best players in the world following their promotion to the Premier League.
Clarke is expected to go head-to-head with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov when champions Manchester United visit Turf Moor on Wednesday night.
The Clarets lost their opening game in the new Premier League season 2-0 at Stoke City on Saturday.
"Welcome to the Premier League - this is going to be a steep learning curve for us," admitted Carlisle.
"Although we put in a good shift with excellent effort and quality on the ball, we just came up short in both penalty boxes.
"Ultimately we were undone by a basic error from myself at one set-piece and a freakish ricochet from a long throw at another.
"We need to tighten up to make sure we turn decent performances into points, but we're not scared of the games coming up.
"We are relishing the challenge because this is where we want to be, plying our trade against the best players in the world.
"So if it is Rooney and Berbatov next, then bring it on. That's why we are here. Let's enjoy the challenge."
