Carlisle: Bring on the champions

17 August 2009 09:55
Last season's Championship play-off winners lost 2-0 at Stoke on Saturday as Ryan Shawcross capitalised on lapse defending from Carlisle, and Stephen Jordan scored an own goal. Burnley now host champions Manchester United on Wednesday before the arrival of Everton next weekend is followed by trips to Chelsea and Liverpool in a daunting set of opening fixtures. Carlisle, though, is not intimidated and is adamant he and his team-mates are relishing the challenge. The defender said in the Daily Mirror: "Welcome to the Premier League - this is going to be a steep learning curve for us. "Although we put in a good shift, with excellent effort and quality on the ball, we just came up short in both penalty boxes. "Ultimately we were undone by a basic error from myself at one set-piece and a freakish ricochet from a long throw at another. "We need to tighten up to make sure we turn decent performances into points, but we're not scared of the games coming up. "We are relishing the challenge because this is where we want to be, plying our trade against the best players in the world. "So if it is (Wayne) Rooney and (Dimitar) Berbatov next, then bring it on - that's why we are here. Let's enjoy the challenge."
