Caldwell named Clarets captain

Burnley manager Steve Cotterill has opted to make recent signing Steven Caldwell club captain rather than Wayne Thomas.

The 26-year-old Scot moved to Turf Moor from Sunderland last month and was handed the armband for the Championship clash with Leicester City.

"Steven will be the new captain and I think he'll be a good one," Cotterill confirmed to the club's official website.

"I spoke to Wayne about it and I felt he didn't need the extra load after the start to the season he had.

"He was obviously disappointed about it because I'm sure he'd have liked to have kept it, but he didn't let that show in his performance against Leicester.

"I think it's lifted the weight off Wayne because he can focus on his own game and not worry about everyone else's."
