Caldwell: Moyes one of the best

The Clarets skipper has lost his battle to recover from a groin injury and play against Everton at Turf Moor on Sunday. However, his absence will do nothing to dim the admiration he has for Moyes, a former boss at nearby Preston. "Obviously everybody speaks about Sir Alex Ferguson on a daily basis and talk of him as the greatest manager of all time," said Caldwell. "But David Moyes is one of the best in the world right now. "He has to operate at the highest level on a budget which is far below that of the clubs they are trying to compete with. "Yet he consistently gets his teams to phenomenal positions in the league." Moyes has found himself engaged in an ill-tempered battle with Manchester City counterpart Mark Hughes over Joleon Lescott for the past few weeks. Much to the former Celtic defender's chagrin, it is looking likely Lescott could get his way and make the move to City before the transfer deadline closes on September 1. Yet, for all the rancour, Caldwell views Lescott as the prime example of what makes Moyes so good. "He picks players up from unfashionable teams and brings the very most out of them," he said. "If you look at Lescott, he did tremendously well for Wolves but really, he was a player with potential. "Moyes took him to Everton and turned him into an England international. "It is testament to the man and the way he must go about his business." It almost sounds as if Caldwell is issuing one of those famous 'come and get me' pleas himself. But he is not, merely the observations of one Scot about another. Caldwell has his own Scot to please - and his own highly-rated manager - in Owen Coyle. Viewed by many as a surprise choice to take over at Burnley less than two years ago, the former St Johnstone boss has gone on to prove what an outstanding prospect he is. First it was steering the Clarets into the Carling Cup semi-finals, where they were unlucky to get beaten by Tottenham, then into the play-offs and that famous day at Wembley when Wade Elliott's memorable strike secured a return to the top flight for the once mighty Lancashire outfit after a 33-year absence. And if that was not enough, on Wednesday night the champions were humbled. All this and not a long ball in sight. Little wonder Coyle is now being bracketed in the same terms as Ferguson and Moyes. Though committed to Coyle's methods, Caldwell does not believe comparisons are deserved just yet. But he is convinced one day they will be. "Owen would be the first to say he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same way as Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes," he said. "But he definitely has the capability to follow them. "He is a great man who brings out the best in players. He gives you a freedom to express yourself and enjoy your work. "It is not an 'anything goes' attitude, if you drop below the standard he thinks you are capable of, he comes down on you like a ton of bricks. "But we are free to go out and express ourselves. No-one plays with fear. We know what is required and he knows what we are capable of."
