Burt is doing the draw

Former Burnley and Bolton striker Steve Taylor is tonight's half time guest at the Carling Cup clash between his two former clubs. Taylor, one of the practical jokers in the Burnley squad of the early 80s, was very popular in the dressing room and was jokingly nicknamed Burt by some members of the squad, named after Burt Lancaster because of his 'film star' looks. He started his career with Bolton and had two spells at Burnley with the first one without doubt the more successful, yet it ended badly for him when he missed a penalty in an FA Cup sixth round tie against Sheffield Wednesday, a poorly hit spot kick that was easily saved. It was somewhat unfair because he'd done well for us between 1980 and 1983 and had scored no less than 46 goals in 119 appearances for Burnley including three hat tricks against Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday (the league game in the same season he missed the penalty) and Charlton. He moved on in the summer of 1983 after being released by Frank Casper and in the 1985/86 season he won the golden boot after scoring 25 of Rochdale's 57 goals. In the aftermath of the Orient game, Brian Miller signed him for a second time just after the start of the 1987/88 season. Steve was now approaching his 32nd birthday and had lost some of his pace and that meant he was nothing like as prolific as he'd been previously. He scored just six times and in the following season he hardly featured, eventually being released again by Frank Casper. He went back to Rochdale again before retiring from the professional game.
