Jon Flanagan left on the sidelines as Burnley welcome Swansea

Jon Flanagan will not be able to make his Burnley debut when last season's Sky Bet Championship winners face Swansea at Turf Moor.

The Liverpool loanee barely featured in pre-season for his parent club prior to his switch and Clarets boss Sean Dyche wants to see his conditioning improve before he thrusts him into action.

One full-back who may feature is Republic of Ireland international Stephen Ward (hamstring) though striker Ashley Barnes, who is suffering from a similar problem, is unlikely to play in a game which could see Icelander Johann Berg Gudmundsson make his senior bow

Meanwhile, David Jones wants points not platitudes in the Premier League this year for a Burnley side eager to upset the elite.

The 31-year-old midfielder was on the Clarets' books two seasons ago when they were relegated straight back to the Championship having failed to win any of their opening 10 league games.

Dyche's side improved, taking four points off Manchester City, but they suffered a number of slender defeats down the stretch meaning plaudits for their performances mattered little to Jones.

This time around Jones knows that results will mean far more than displays and has asserted that a more experienced group will be aiming to follow the recent promoted sides by taking points off the bigger clubs in the division.

"I felt last time there was a bit of that feeling of: 'Oh, we've played really well against Man United away but didn't get the result' - that's not good enough," Jones explained.

"We feel that we've moved on from that and results are the main priority. I'm not naive in thinking you can't take positives from good performances, especially away at any club in the Premier League, but we need to learn from our mistakes last time.

"I just think as the season developed, it was the same old story, we played well and got beat, or played well and got a draw at home. It starts to wear thin.

"Last time the first 10 games were a bit of a bedding-in period, where we were thinking: 'Are we good enough? I'm not quite sure'. This time we've got a lot more experience."

Record signing Borja Baston must wait for his Swansea debut.

Borja completed a club record B#15.5million move from Atletico Madrid on Thursday, but Swansea manager Francesco Guidolin will not integrate the 23-year-old Spaniard into his squad until next week.

Gylfi Sigurdsson will be among the substitutes even though he has only just returned to training following Iceland's summer exploits, while Wales defender Neil Taylor is not included as he builds up fitness after his post-Euro 2016 break.

Swansea will also be without Ashley Williams after the skipper ended his eight-year stay in Wales by signing for Everton, meaning Federico Fernandez and Jordi Amat will team up at the heart of the defence at Turf Moor.

Boss Guidolin has challenged his players to show the courage and character of former captain Williams.

"I was not surprised to see him (Williams) go because at the beginning of my holidays I knew there was a possibility we would start the season without him," said Guidolin.

"Then I knew there was this offer from Everton but I decided to stay out (of it).

"I spoke always with the chairman, but my position was to stay out of it because I believe that when a player decides to go it's better to let him go.

"He was an important player, but I think this is his decision.

"When a player has the possibility to change and go away for a new challenge it's correct to respect this decision.

"We have leaders in this team. Leaders are not only captains, and in this situation all of us have to show more personality and character and courage.

"We will miss some of these with Ash, not just the player but as a man."
