Burnley to Sharp-en attack
Burnley confirmed their second summer signing, that of Chris Iwelumo from Wolves, at around 4:00 p.m. today, and just a couple of hours later news broke that we'd had an offer accepted for Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp. The news broke on Sky Sports News under one of their 'Sky Sources' banners, but nothing had been said from either club although Burnley interest in the player should come as no surprise given that he'd played for manager Brian Laws at Scunthorpe.However, a more considered report has come from the Sheffield press this evening, and that suggests that Burnley have made an enquiry today for Sharp, although that's as far as it has gone with the Sheffield United board having received no official offer.Sharp is very much in demand and Doncaster manager Sean O'Driscoll would definitely like to take him to the Keepmoat Stadium next season after he had a successful loan spell with them during the 2009/10 season.The 24-year-old striker had started his career with Sheffield United but was signed by Laws for Scunthorpe in the summer of 2005 for £100,000 after a successful loan with Rushden & Diamonds.He scored no less than 53 goals in two seasons for Scunthorpe and that prompted the Blades to sign him back in a big seven figure transfer but in three years back at Bramall Lane he's struggled to establish himself and has started just 38 league games for them.For much of last season he was at Doncaster and very much found his goalscoring form again, netting 15 goals in 32 league starts until his season was brought to an early end because of a thigh injury at the end of March.It was suggested that O'Driscoll was prepared to pay £600,000 for Sharp who has now scored no less than 85 league goals in 184 appearances, of which 166 have been starts. But with Burnley now in the running it's much more likely that he'll be at Turf Moor next season than returning to Doncaster.
