Bottom of table Boyeson back at Burnley

Carl Boyeson, from East Yorkshire, returns to Turf Moor for the first time since Easter last year today to referee our home game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Last year it was the Easter Monday game when the Clarets drew 1-1 against Steve Cotterill's Pompey and I don't think, had the game still been going now, that he'd have realised that Portsmouth had come to spoil and waste as much time as possible.

His previous visit was the Crystal Palace game in the promotion run in and he had a nightmare of a game that night when thankfully the assistant spotted a couple of crucial incidents that he'd missed, one giving us the vital late penalty that drew us level in a game we finally won 4-2.

He's in his tenth season as a Football League referee but he still operates mainly in the lower two divisions and this season he's refereed only eight Championship games today with three of them coming in a two week spell in February.

He's not the most card happy of referees but recently his red card has been overworked . He's sent off four players in his last five games and one in each of the last three. One of those players sent off was Middlesbrough's Barry Robson in their televised 2-0 home defeat against Leeds and he became the first Championship player to be sent off by Boyeson since Owen Garvan in February 2007.

In 32 games this season he's sent off a total of ten players whilst also yellow carding 81 players. Of those 81 yellow cards, 37 have gone to home team players and 44 to away team players.

Boyeson's last game was last Saturday and the League One game at Victoria Park between Hartlepool United and Sheffield United which the Blades won with a penalty.

Andy Monkhouse, Peter Hartley and Sam Collins of Hartlepool were all yellow carded as was Sheffield United's Neill Collins. Hartley received a second yellow card five minutes from time.

Boyeson can be found quite easily in the RATE THE REF table. He's in bottom place with a rating of just 31.87 out of 100.

The assistant referees today are Mark Astley (Manchester) and Anthony Tankard (South Yorkshire). The fourth official is Peter Wright (Merseyside).
