Bobby Madley back to referee at Turf Moor

Bobby Madley from Osset, the younger of the two refereeing brothers, will referee tonight's Capital One Cup tie at Turf Moor against West Ham United, almost a year since his last controversial visit for a league game against Charlton Athletic.

His brother Andy gave that bizarre penalty against us at Derby back in August, but Bobby's last Burnley game all centred on his decision to send off Kieran Trippier after just a quarter of an hour for handling the ball on the line in our 1-0 home defeat against Charlton last November.

Burnley, quite rightly, appealed the red card but astonishingly the commission backed Madley, who was set to join the Premier League elite, and Trippier was forced to sit out the away win at Hull.

Prior to that game Madley had refereed two Burnley away games in the previous season, at Birmingham and Middlesbrough, where there had been no problems whatsoever.

He was being tipped to go all the way to the Premier League right from the start and when he refereed his first game at that level it was in a blaze of publicity. It was Southampton's home game against West Brom last April.

Saints lost the game 3-0 but the major talking point was that all of Gaston Ramirez, Marc-Antoine Fortune and Danny Fox were all sent off.

Madley was hugely congratulated for getting all three decisions correct in the media but it is noteworthy that he's only been allocated one top flight game since, and that between two of last season's promoted clubs Hull and Cardiff who fought out a 1-1 draw at the KC Stadium.

It's one of eight games he's refereed this season and he's been busy collecting cards. He's already yellow carded 33 players and sent off three more. Of those yellow cards 14 have gone to home team players and 17 to away team players.

The first of the red cards was in the Championship, that of Millwall's Alan Dunne in a 1-1 draw at Brighton in August. The other two were Gary Roberts (Chesterfield) and Michael O'Connor (Rotherham).

His last game came on Saturday in the Championship's bottom of the table South Yorkshire clash between Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday. The game ended in a 1-1 draw but Wednesday won the card count. Barnsley had goalscorer Marcus Pedersen yellow carded while both Roger Johnson and Atdhe Nuhiu also went into the book.

Bobby Madley is currently 36th in the RATE THE REF Table with a rating of 62.95 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Gary Beswick (County Durham) and Ian Hussin (Liverpool). The fourth official is Football League referee David Coote (Nottinghamshire) who refereed our recent 3-0 win against Charlton.
