Bizarre goals and a return for Vokes

Burnley went into tonight's game at Bath City with a new, but familiar, face in the squad. Sam Vokes had completed his move from Wolves and was named on the bench by manager Eddie Howe for this third pre-season game.

The deal, which was hardly a surprise, went through around an hour before kick off allowing Vokes to take part but manager Eddie Howe opted to start with Charlie Austin and Danny Ings up front.

We dominated the first half without threatening very often and went in at half time with the score at 0-0, but things changed in the second half when Keith Treacy, on 56 minutes, hit a shot from 30 yards that beat goalkeeper Jason Mellor, although the goalkeeper should have done much better with it.

That prompted Howe to make changes and Vokes joined nine other substitutes as we changed the entire outfield on 59 minutes and the game restarted in the most bizarre fashion.

Kieran Trippier had gone down injured and that allowed us to make the changes. Restarting the game, Bath's Adie Harris sportingly tried to play the ball back to Brian Jensen but succeeded only in lobbing the ball over him and into the net.

It was a reminder of a League Cup tie played in the South West a few years ago between Yeovil and Plymouth. On that occasion, Yeovil's Lee Johnson did just the same and so they immediately allowed Stephen Crawford to go through and equalise for Plymouth.

Sportingly the same happened here and I think it is fair to say George Porter will never score an easier goal for Burnley as he was allowed to go without challenge although the goalkeeper saved his first effort.

It all looked as though it was going to end 2-1 but Ross Wallace hit a powerful shot into the bottom corner right at the end to give us a 3-1 win and a third successive pre-season victory.

The Clarets will remain in Bath, training at the university, before moving on to play Cheltenham on Saturday afternoon.
