Away teams dominate in Championship

25 September 2012 10:09
The weekend Championship fixtures finally came to an end last night as Huddersfield joined Middlesbrough, Barnsley, Burnley, Charlton, Brighton, Wolves and Bolton in recording away wins. Stephen Foster got Barnsley's first

Eight away wins in twelve games, a draw at Udinese Feeder FC, and that meant only Crystal Palace, who came from 2-0 behind to beat Cardiff, Leeds and Leicester were home winners.

With Charlie Austin having been granted our second goal in the win against Peterborough, he became the second player to hit a Championship hat trick this season along with Pete Whittingham of Cardiff.

That two has now become five. Glenn Murray got all three, with two from the penalty spot, in that Palace win and, on Sunday, David Nugent, who had scored his first goal of the season against us four days earlier, got all three in Leicester's win against Hull.

But it's Barnsley and Craig Davies who should take pride of place this week. Davies hit four of Barnsley's goals in a sensational 5-0 win at Birmingham. I was receiving text updates on the scoreline while on my way home from Derby but it could have been worse for Brum with an eight or nine goal win for Barnsley a result that could have been reality such was their domination.

Boss Keith Hill said it was reward for the unjust scoreline at Blackburn in midweek, but Birmingham boss Lee Grant looked close to tears as he failed to explain just what had gone on. Ironically, it is the biggest away win in the Championship since Birmingham themselves won 6-0 at Millwall last season.

Overall, the league has changed with the top two, Blackburn and Blackpool, both losing at home. I watched the Blackburn game and was stunned at the continued abuse aimed at Steve Kean throughout the game.

What do these people want? Are they not aware just how good a job he's doing? Was Shebby Singh leading the chanting? Whatever, he's apparently on the brink, although latest reports suggest it could take a few weeks. What a shame!

The results and stats are below along with the leading goalscorers, with Austin now proudly at the top, each clubs disciplinary record, the highest and lowest attendances and the weekend fixtures.
