As you were - top and bottom

07 November 2011 11:55
Southampton and West Ham both won on Saturday to keep the top two places in the Championship whilst the bottom three was always going to be unchanged despite two of them, Bristol City and Doncaster Rovers, both winning.

Away from the big games there was some real interest down at Fratton Park where Portsmouth played host to former manager Steve Cotterill and his Nottingham Forest team. It was, I think it is fair to say, a perfect day for Pompey, Dave Kitson, and those who didn't appreciate Cotterball is the new man at Forest went home with a 3-0 defeat.

Just to make matters worse, two of the goals came from one of his last Pompey signings Erik Huseklepp with the other from Dave Kitson who made a very public 'Good Riddance' comment when Cotterill moved on.

Kitson might well have enjoyed that goal, but probably the most appreciated goal of the weekend came at Ipswich where the home side fell to a 3-2 defeat against bottom of the league Doncaster who were fielding Willie McKay's latest capture El Hadji Diouf who was making his second appearance for the South Yorkshire club.

Diouf scored twice but it was Donny's second that will be remembered. Already 1-0 up, Billy Sharp doubled the lead. It was his second goal this week following the tragic death of his two day old son. Amazingly the Ipswich fans, right around the ground, stood and applauded, something they repeated when Sharp was substituted just over twenty minutes from the end.

Today, Doncaster Rovers and Sharp have responded to it. On their official site it reads: "Doncaster Rovers Football Club should like to thank all of the Ipswich Town fans who attended the game on Saturday for the unique and amazing support and respect they showed to Billy Sharp.

"The reception he received when his name was announced before the game, and when he came off, was fantastic. Even more amazing was the fact that the whole stadium stood and applauded his goal; such respect is something which is rarely seen."

Sharp himself added: "The Ipswich Town fans were fantastic; I had a lump in my throat when I scored and they did that for me. They didn't have to do that as I'm an opposing player. I'd like to thank them sincerely for showing that respect to me."

On a day when thousands of football fans also stood to remember those who have lost their lives in the two World Wars and other, more recent conflicts, it does, as I wrote in my match report, put a real perspective on the performances of our teams and the results.

Those results are below, along with the stats, the leading goalscorers, each club's disciplinary record, the highest and lowest attendances and the first fixtures after the international break.
